Welcome to the third of six videos from my tour of Colombia in 2024. This was organised with a local bike company, Moto Ride Medellin, and was a recce tour for future outings in 2025 and maybe beyond.

We had a lunch stop at a spa, enjoying the hot water, before getting back on the bikes and climbing to over 4000m through the Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados. has anybody balanced the rear wheel of the Kove 450 Rally? How much weight needed to be placed ( I guess ;-) ) directly opposite the rim lock. My approximation calculation ( 119/128 * 213g) says 198g ...
What torgue is the ABS sensor please. I can't find it in the service manual
The exhaust system seems rust peone.
Can you recommend me a website in USA to buy it?
I've seen all 3 of the Kove videos and I'm in a bit of a dilemma...at 58 I'm returning to biking after 20 years and am almost certainly going to start off with a new crf 300 rally...however every video is critical of the suspension and i certainly can't spent £6.5k on a new bike then another £500 on a new shock...I'm 6'1 and 200 pounds. I just want to do light trails and my 4 mile commute to work..for £6.5k do you think i should look elsewhere ( the 27hp also concerns me, but i definitely want a light, reliable machine)
Where are you based? If you fancy a trip to the Peak District for a comparison, let me know!
@PeakMotorcycles that's a cracking offer, much appreciated but unfortunately I fractured my leg at work last week and cannot drive/walk/ travel etc for 8 weeks but the Peak District is definitely one of the places I intend to visit on my new bike especially after seeing it on your video...I'm also keeping this from my wife who is totally against the biking idea, hence the 20 year break from biking... I'm just going to buy the machine, put in the verandah...then face the music!!!
Riding on wet roads in this type of environment in Dynamic mode. Why did BMW equip the bike with a Rain mode? Did they waste their time & money?
🤣. For me, probably. I ride my 1250GS in dynamic mode all the time. The only time I ever put it in rain mode is standing water with a pillion.
Riding in lots of rain on these types of roads in Dynamic mode. I wonder why BMW equipped the bike with a Rain mode. Seems they wasted their time & money.
I missed this one. Mutts are brilliant little bikes. I'd have a Mastiff 250. Changed my mind; I'd have the Razorback 250. Stunning bike. Nick
hi I like to safe weight but I´ll keep using my Barkhuster, I don´t like that clamps of Kove they looks weak and you have the possibility in case of crash to break levers brackets bad bussines ;-)
great video ! How did you mount your phone under the dash ?
I’m going to get one for my midlife crisis next year. Reminds me of my ss50 I used to ride when I was a kid.
I think you can have a midlife crisis every year, for a few years, if you apply yourself! 🤣
Just fitted one looks great going to try it this weekend
I hope all goes well. I noticed an improvement on road, not much of a change on the trails, but then I’m not riding the bike particularly hard.
First ride with it fitted I like it
Amazing video!
I’m amazed that no one else did one and it’s still getting views after three years! Thank you.
This is now a dead project. Never went into production.
Thanks and that’s a shame. I’m still glad I got to see one and try it.
@@PeakMotorcycles Yeah, I was enthusiastic as well, it just looked well made.
I'm not sure what you did. Did you rotate the bottom ring down?
Yes, but first I had to undo the top ring a little to unlock it, then the bottom ring down, then the top one down on top of it to lock it.
@@PeakMotorcycles I have the 250 rally so this won't work 😞😞.
When you upgraded you crf300 Rally header pipe, did you replace the header gasket? If so, did you use the round copper type, or the flat type? Any preference?
Hi, apologies for the delay in responding, I’m away on a bike trip. It was a while ago now but I don’t recall buying anything extra so I either reused the existing or one came with the Arrow. In general, I’ve used the round copper type more, but I’m not sure if that’s a preference, or just what came with them. Thinking about the movement of the exhaust, and the temperature it reaches, I would think that a copper round one would cope better with expansion and contraction to maintain a seal.
Thank you.
I have this same bag, but the base plate is for a 2019 Yamaha Tracer 700. I bought a new bike and kept the bag. Do you know if there's a base plate for a 2024 Africa Twin? Been searching but can't find, not even in Shad's website
Did you have to set up a wi-Fi hotspot or just use the app?
I connected my phone to the GS-911 as the WiFi access point and was able to operate it that way. Does that make sense?
Perfect video, thank you very much.
High-metre elevation definitely detrimentally affects performance. I bet you were coughing, too. Spectacular scenery. And lots of meat to finish with. Nick
Sounds like the perfect day, except for the coughing, and the performance impact 🤣 (actually, the latter was fine, just couldn’t go any higher than 3rd)
Looks like a really fun ride. Which Klim jacket are you wearing?
It’s a Klim Induction Pro. I also took a Carlsbad Jacket (and wore the Carlsbad pants for all the trip). I’ve tried a few different suits and though it would be nice to think there is a ‘best’ for everything, I’m not so sure. My ‘best’ for cold weather riding (-5C to 25C) is my Rukka Nivala. Above 25C I find it just too hot. It doesn’t vent very well at all. For 10C-45C I find the Carlsbad suit to be really good. The double vents in the legs combined with the vents all over the jacket really help. It’s waterproof too.
@@PeakMotorcycles thanks for the tips. I just ordered my first pair of klim pants for the extreme heat where I live, the Mojave.
I forgot I was subscribed to you. LOL Your EICMA videos for excellent. 👍
Welcome back!
First day trail riding bent subframe from low speed drop 🤷♂️ not the best design in my book. Will always shop for a bolt on subframe from now on
Wow, sounds like you got a Friday afternoon bike… I’ve had more than a dozen low and medium speed (let’s call them drops, but it’s probably poor riding 🤣) and have had no problems at all. I’d take it back to the dealer.
@@PeakMotorcycles its all good lol, but yeah feeling like assembly people were ready to be off haha. As I was messing with the bike recently removed the air box side plastic and a mounting bolt for the exhaust landed in my lap… 🤦♂️🤣😂
@@Throttleplaysouch… that doesn’t inspire confidence does it….
Thank you so much. Made my world so much better. Almost bought the SW racks unnecessarily. 👍Great video. Cheers. 🇨🇦
Glad I could help!
Watching this a second time because mine just arrived… fitting it this morning… wish me luck
I’ve heard that most new ones these days fit much better so I hope you have a better experience!
I just purchased one of these and nowhere i could find a video that explains it as well as yours, thanks now i know where to plug it and what to do with it , thanks
Thanks. I have two or three more that I’m filming this weekend, tyre pressure sensor setting, sports dash changing (with the track view…) and the turn signal light options. Hopefully they’ll be up on the channel a few days later.
I wouldnt mind if Kawasaki launched a slightly more comfortable bike with the h2 engine. But the h2 SX is already pretty good for touring.
Yup, it’s a cracking thing, but as you said, maybe the H2SX was them doing that! 🤣
Another off topic Kove Question; the service interval for that model, is it 2000km? And valve checks? Love the idea of the bike, really hope the parts and reliability stand the test of time.
Depends what you're using it for. If you're racing or doing the Dakar, then probably oil and filters every day is needed. For trail and adventure riding, I think it's closer to every 5000km. I've done about 1000 miles (1600km) on mine and I've done two oil changes, my choice. It's quick and easy and the oil has come out quite clean each time. No valve checks yet, but I'll see what I can find out.
The lightning on the surrounding peaks made the ride home amazing. Epic day out on traiks
Unfortunately none of those came out on the video… in fact the GoPro really struggled in the dark. Then again, so did I! 🤣
For God’s sake, Larry?! Stop babbling, go in kind of prepared just a little bit, be focused and gather some information. Don’t need to see you. Thanks
Thanks for the feedback. Do you know how many manufacturers are at EICMA, how much information they publish beforehand, and how little time there is to film? A video takes a couple of hours to film, edit and publish and pays between £2-£20, not including the cost of spending a few days in Italy. I can try for this year, but I fear you are asking the impossible and respectfully apologise that I don’t think I’ll be able to.
No wonder why we all pay ridiculous amounts in insurances... Because absolute morons travel to places like this. If you were able to read, you would understand. "... Country Summary: Violent crime, such as homicide, assault, and armed robbery, is widespread. Organized criminal activities, such as extortion, robbery, and kidnapping, are common in some areas. Terrorist groups and criminal organizations continue operating and carrying out attacks in Colombia. They may attack with little or no warning, targeting transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, police stations, military facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, airports, other public areas, and U.S. government facilities." Hi Andre. Very much enjoyed the video, I'm not jealous in the slightest, just a bit green 🤢👍 with envy lol
Fancy it for next year? Probably going the last two weeks in February. Escape the winter for eternal spring?!
Great video, as usual - thanks! I'm looking at replacing the full exhaust on my Rally, looking to reduce weight AND achieve a more pleasant note, (but NOT noise!) Any performance improvement would be a bonus but not a show stopper. I'd also thought about a 550 mod for more precise low throttle response. However, it's just struck me there might be insurance implications - many companies like any excuse to jack up the premium. Any thoughts?
Answer to my own question about insurance implications: I rang the insurance company, told them what I was thinking of doing (exhaust + 550 + suspension) and asked how much it would cost. After a 10 minutes to think about it, they said "just pay the admin charge for the change." - SORTED! 👍
I went for the Arrow exhaust with a CAT in the end. It was then the only homologated exhaust available. No power increase but it did save a few kg high up on the bike and isn’t loud but has a pleasing sound. To my ear at least! I might have done the 550 ECU. Maybe a touch more top end and a bit smoother low down, but it’s marginal. I have the airbox mods to do, so perhaps after that I’ll see if I can dyno it vs a standard bike just to see.
thank you
You're welcome. I have a few more GS-911 videos coming from next week.
Good solution, Andre. Looks solid. Cheerio, Günter/Nürnberg
Thanks Günter.
Looked fun. What a beautiful country. 200cc sounds about right for those roads. Minus the luggage, as you point out. Glad that little dog didn't run out in front of you. Nick
Yup, it's a pretty cool place with a wide variety of landscapes within fairly short distances, and the overnight flights makes it quite accessible from Europe for a week (which becomes 10 nights... it's a long week, but two of those are on the plane, 3 in Medellin and 5 on the ride) And yes, 200cc and 16hp works just fine. The bikes might say enduro on them but they aren't. They do have electric starts and six gears though which means good use of 1-4 on the trails and long enough legs for 5 and 6 to keep ahead of traffic on the bigger roads. Elevation saps the power a bit (above 4000m 3rd gear is the new 4th!) but that's a few days away.
Great commentary which navigating through Colombia! Your video really shows that it’s not the bike or the destination but the journey which really matters! Safe travels!!! 🛵
Glad you enjoyed it!
amazing place to ride.
Yes it was! And is. I’m going back for two more tours in February 2025 if you fancy it!
Thanks for the great review sir!
You’re welcome
I’ve also fitted the pro guards (actually they were fitted for me before delivery) and my experience with using tape to pad the bar inserts is that they slip out easily under load when the bike is dropped. After a day out dropping the bike five times I noticed they came more than half an inch out of the handlebar ends both sides. The tape just strips off inside the bar ends. I’ve since refitted them, this time stuffed with four short lengths of lamp flex with a rubbery insulation. When fitted I could no longer pull the guards out of the handlebars by hand as I had been able to with tape. I’ve heard some people use a length of garden hose to pad the inserts, which might work even better.
Thanks. Good to know. Another option is to cut a length of “tape” from an aluminium can. I’ll try this for now, but thanks for the tip.
As an avid scuba diver, I know the feeling of being partial to your own gear. But I never traveled anywhere to go ride motorcycles. Wish I had... But carrying all my scuba gear really got old after a while. I actually did it as profession for many years, And my bag is even larger than that one. Lol, it truly is quite ridiculous to lug around the globe. But, it’s all for good times though right? Moscow does appear to have high quality bags...
I don’t envy scuba travellers… it makes motorcycles light packing, even in one of these! 🤣
Dear, i greet you from chile where we tested the ajp spr 510r and we found it fantastic. i leave you the review we made with a lot of love. ruclips.net/video/W02gNScHX0g/видео.html
front calliper bolts need about 30nm of torque - no way i would want to use those cheap little hex bolts - is there not a full piece guard that is plastic and covers the disc and the calliper? That is the more normal way and has been used on dirtbikes forever for good reason - also you may wanna think about rear disc guard, 10000x more likely to get damaged than the rear reservoir.
Yup. It’s gone in the bin!
great video as every time
Thanks. It was a bit of an afterthought, but worth sharing I think.
This bike looks superb. Nick
It has a lot of positives. Also a few things work through, but then I'm using it for a trail and adventure bike rather than a Rally Racer, so perhaps a few modifications are expected.
Too expensive, the cheaper one from temu are doing just fine
Which ones? The Barkbusters do come at a price, but they are good (I use them on other bikes). I haven't tried the Temu ones though so will look them up. Thanks.
These Heralds look pretty good. The Brat 250 was my favorite of the lot. I actually already have a great moto stable. The Honda CRF300 Rally for playing in the dirt, the Kawasaki KLR650 (my personal favorite) for all around use, and the Triumph Scrambler 1200xe for long motorway rides and the occasional off-road jaunt. Knowing me, I’l probably eventually trade in the Scrambler 1200xe for a Triumph Tiger 1200. I learn a lot from the bikes you show us, and really appreciate the work you do to keep us informed. Happy Trails
Thanks! And yes, the Heralds do seem to be filling a gap. Not many manufacturers are making uncomplicated and good value bikes in the UK. I suspect the engines are based on something from days gone by in Japan, now made in China, but for under £3000 in the UK they look good and probably go well enough.
@@PeakMotorcycles I test drove a Triumph Tiger 900 last weekend. I really like it. I think it will be my next bike.
Hello. I have the Tusk pannier racks. Will the adapter plate fit my rack? Thank you for sharing.
Hi, No idea I'm afraid. It's a pretty snug fit between the bars, so if the dimensions are the same then it should . Unfortunately i don't have mine any more to be able to check for you. Apologies.
I've used Barkbusters on all my bikes for over 30 years now. I currently have 6 bikes fitted with them. I'm old and clumsy and consequently I fall over a lot. The Barkbusters have survived everything, including some monumental enduro racing crashes. At worst they might be a little bent out of shape, in which case I put them in a vice and slip a bit of water pipe onto them to straighten them - no problem. I can't remember when I last bent or broke a brake or clutch lever. As well, they also seem to help in avoiding bending the handlebar. They are very strong. For me, there is no need to change brand.
I’m the same for most of my bikes, but I was also curious to try the Kove ones, particularly as that’s what they use on the Rally bikes and they are half a kilo lighter.
@@PeakMotorcycles Great review Andre and I really like the Kove 450.
